This week’s short holler is on a topic highly applicable to
skyscraper design: the 2030 Palette, developed by noted environmental
architect, Ed Mazria. Skyscrapers are
not isolated islands of glass or stone, being an integral part of ever larger energy
networks across our entire global landscape.
Many design decisions on both a local and regional level have a direct
relationships to overall energy consumption, and can be wisely used to save
businesses and consumers considerable money.
For skyscrapers, these recommendations and suggestions can go even
further, and help to better define initial designs over the life of the
building.
This ‘palette system’ promotes what I’ve long advocated for:
design rules of thumb based on building size, scale, and regional
applicability. Just click on a size of
building your thinking of, or the region you want to build in, and this guide
has some proactive suggestions that will save your building on energy use. While it doesn’t have any specific skyscraper
‘swatches’ or overall percentages of energy use such selections can have on a
building, I - like many others in our growing HeightsRising community - look
forward to adding our additional ‘swatches’ soon. Please keep posted for similar site
arrangements, and setups in the near future!!!
